So Close!

Well I bought my cap and gown the other day (I know, a little late!). I can’t believe we’re this close to graduation. Less than two weeks away! I guess us graduates should be making sure all our paperwork and grades are ready to go! I’ve also started sending out invitations, which you should too. Gotta give Aunt Betsy a chance to fly in from Hickville. Honestly, I don’t have an Aunt Betsy and I’m pretty sure Hickville doesn’t exist. We should check into that. Also be sure to check out the RSU Online Graduation Survey. It’s quick and easy. Good luck in our last couple weeks at RSU!

PS Check out the video documentary of my last days on my radio show Afternoon Delight. Kyle Olson is a video genius!

Graduate Day

Well today marked the ended to my last Spring Break as a college student. Heart breaking I know. But that just means I (and hopefully you) am just that much closer to graduation! You might not know, but my younger brother is actually graduating from Claremore High this spring too. My mom is having some serious “they shouldn’t be growing up this fast” issues. This past week they were filling out the order forms for senior pictures, invitations, caps and gowns. But don’t feel left out! Monday, March 30 is our first Graduate Day. Just stop by the Student Center Rotunda between 9:00am and 3:00pm. You can pick up your cap and gown, have your resume and cover letter critiqued, plus get all sorts of great tips about financial planning and job searching. And of course, you’ll learn all you need to know about commencement. So drop by! Also the link below will (hopefully) take you to the webpage where you can find the official RSU Commencement Check List. Pretty helpful. Check it out!

Final Thought: Make sure you check your grades with your professors. The end of the semester is sneaking up on us and you don’t want to be caught by any surprises! (I’ve found that money or baked-goods usually go a long way to help in these situations.)

They're gonna fire me!

Well I finally got my head above water, so now that I’ve dried off I reckon I’ll update my blog. The last couple of weeks I’ve been bogged down with homework and I apologize to the die-hard followers of this blog. I know you’ve just been aching for an update.

First off, have you checked out the new Student Services Center?! It’s amazing! Me and some friends happened to wander over for a few games of pool and foosball and we were impressed. I’ve heard nothing but great things from everyone who has been over there. If you haven’t already… go check it out!

This past week I’ve been working on an assignment for my Capstone class taught by the intelligent, handsome, and ever-well-spoken Dr. Boyd (he was upset that I hadn’t mentioned him yet.) The assignment was to find an actual job posting and create a resume and cover letter that you would use to apply for the position. I mentioned it last time, but it never hurts to repeat. If you need any help with your resume just visit Kimberly Lopez at that amazing new Student Services Center. You can make an appointment by calling Career Services at 343-7864 or just shoot’em an email at careerservices@rsu.edu. They’ll help polish your resume and hone your interview skills. You can also apply for jobs at www.collegecentral.com/rsu. It’s not too early to start looking.

By the way, please direct all your letters to my professors. Simply ask them to excuse me from any homework so that I can focus on my writing. Thanks!

One Week Down!

Howdy! I figured I’d better get to bloggin’ asap. Sorry it’s been so long. I’ve made it through my first week of my last semester! So far I’ve applied for graduation and finished my degree completion worksheet. Pretty painless, but if you’re planning on graduating this semester and haven’t done this yet… you better get on it!

I’m enrolled in my capstone course this semester. Basically we prepare to find a job. It’s a really good program because we prepare our resumes and learn interview skills, all that good stuff. It’s nice because we don’t have to worry about doing all this on our own. If you need help with your resume or you’re worried about job interviews get a hold of Kimberly Lopez. She can help prepare your resume and run you through a mock interview. Just shoot her an email at klopez@rsu.edu or give her a call at 343-7864.

Well, I guess I’d better cut this one short so I can get back to reading (yeah, surprising I know, I can read!) I’ll try to be sure to keep this blogs coming though.

First Blog!!!

I’m impressed. Very impressed actually. Not too many people would be brave enough to click on a picture like that. I guess I’ll just play it off as “being extremely excited about my upcoming graduation.” Yeah, that’ll work.

Well my name is Ryan Floyd. I’m a Communications major (Radio/TV) and this is my last semester (knock on wood) here at Rogers State University. I grew up here in Claremore, and graduated from Claremore High School in 2005. Yes, that’s right; I’m a four year graduate. Surprisingly (to me) I’ve stayed right on schedule. That may be my biggest piece of advice to new freshman. Stay on schedule. Don’t get me wrong though. Stay on your schedule. If you know it will take you 4 ½ or even 5 years, fine. Just be sure to set your goals and stay with them.

I’m about to sound like a paid-endorser here (but I’m not getting a dime for this. Trust me, I tried!) RSU has the best staff. My advisers, Dr. Gentry and Prof. Williams, have been such a huge help to me throughout my time here at RSU. But I have a great example of just how great these people are.

Today I had a question about enrolling in a class for my minor, Business Administration. I got to walk right into the department head’s office; mind you I’ve never met this man. He answered all of my questions, gave me some much needed advice, and even filled out my paperwork for me! That’s just the way the faculty are here at RSU. You really get one on one interaction with them. It makes the whole experience so much better.

So that’s my first piece of advice: stay on your schedule.
And don’t try to enroll the Friday before classes start. The enrollment office gets crowded.
